New York, Sept 21, IRNA -- President Hassan Rouhani urged all parties to stay committed to the precise and timely implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The Iranian President made the remarks on Tuesday night local time (Wednesday morning Tehran time) in a meeting with the British Prime Minister Theresa May on the sidelines of the 71st United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
He referred to the JCPOA as a great development which could be used as a role model in tackling basic problems and fundamental differences.
The President noted that Iran has been completely faithful to its JCPOA commitments and would continue to do so as long as the other parties involved in the landmark nuclear agreement stayed committed to their obligations as well.
Iran and the world six major powers (US, Russia, Britain, China, France and Germany) signed a historic nuclear deal in July 2015 ending more than a decade of nuclear disputes between the two sides. The implementation day of the agreement was January 16, 2016.
According to the JCPOA, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program and provide enhanced access to international atomic monitors. The other sides have in return committed to terminating all nuclear-related sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) against Iran.
President Rouhani stressed that other parties could not claim to be faithful to their promises while certain problems in banking and insurance areas were still not solved.
Noting that European governments have to ensure big European banks for cooperating with Iran, President Rouhani stressed, 'London can take the major step to this end.'
Expressing happiness over the improving relations between Tehran and London over the past few years, he said the two countries could 'overcome negative historical impressions through cooperation built on the bases of common interests and mutual respect.'
Touching upon the sensitive conditions in the Middle East region, President Rouhani stressed, 'Sophisticated regional problems could be settled only through diplomatic solutions.'
He went on to voice Iran's readiness to cooperate with the European Union including the UK as well as regional countries to promote security and stability in the Middle East especially in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
Meanwhile, the British premier voiced satisfaction over the growing political and economic relations between the two countries recently and said she supported upgrading of bilateral relations in all possible areas.
Noting that London would continue its support for the JCPOA, Prime Minister May stressed the need for all parties to stay committed to their obligations.
She further noted that London is lobbying with all JCPOA parties to tackle the existing banking and insurance problems to facilitate Iran's access to economic opportunities.
London is preparing to send a big banking delegation to Tehran for technical purposes, the British Prime Minister added.
President Rouhani is currently in New York to attend the 71st annual meeting of the UN General Assembly.
He is also to address the Assembly.
Prior to his visit to New York, the President paid an official visit to Cuba, where he met and conferred with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro and Cuban revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro respectively.
President Rouhani's visit to Cuba took place on the second leg of his tour to two Latin American countries. On the first leg of his tour, he went to Venezuela where he addressed the 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement which was held on September 17-18.
