Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani plans to reestablish the Management and Planning Organization (MPO), six years after the controversial dissolution of the strategic body, a presidential aide says.
Iran’s Vice President for Supervision and Strategic Affairs Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said on Tuesday that the MPO is to be reestablished “within the framework of a 100-day plan.”
He added that the MPO’s revival is part of measures to reform the country’s fiscal, budgetary and human resources systems.
The MPO was tasked with a variety of duties, including drafting annual budget bills, evaluation of human resources, and formulation of medium- and long-term development plans.
However, in July 2007, then President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dissolved the MPO and established a new budgeting body directly under his own control.
Ahmadinejad’s measure sparked a flurry of criticism among political and economic circles in Iran.
“Unfortunately, the dissolution of the MPO disrupted the government’s budgeting and human resources [administration]. This measure has been constantly criticized by experts,” Nobakht said.
Reestablishment of the MPO was among the major campaign promises of Rouhani.
