Iran has 17,000 centrifuges: Ex-official

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Aug 17, IRNA -- Ex-Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEO) Freydoun Abbasi Davani said the main problem in Bushehr Power Plant was in connection with its design and the problem has been solved to a large extent during the past year.

Abbasi was talking to the reporters on Saturday, his last day as the head of AEO. President Hassan Rohani appointed Ali Akbar Salehi, former minister of foreign affairs, as the new chief of AEO on Saturday.

On the exact time of the plant handover to Iran, Abbasi said Bushehr Power Plant would not be handed over to Iran as long as Iran's Atomic Energy Organization gets the needed guarantees.

On the number of centrifuges in Iran, Abbasi said more than 10,000 centrifuges are actively working and nearly 7,000 are ready to start working.

'We have more than 1,000 centrifuges of new generation which have been designed and manufactured in Iran and are ready to be operational,' said Abbasi.

'9,000 centrifuges are working in Natanz to enrich uranium at the level of 3.5 percent and 700 centrifuges in Natanz and Fordow enrich uranium in the level of 20 percent,' said the ex-head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization.
