Russia has called for "a new full-fledged" round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers soon after the inauguration of Iran's new president, Hassan Rohani.
"We hope that a new full-fledged round of dialogues between the six countries and Iran will take place shortly after the new president of the Islamic Republic takes office," Russian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Pyotr Ilyichov told a session of the UN Security Council on Monday.
The swearing-in ceremony of Rohani will be held on August 4, one day after his endorsement by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
"A considerable resource for attaining first decisions at the talks has already been accumulated," Ilyichov stated, reaffirming Russia's stance on resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic channels.
Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers - the US, China, France, Britain, and Russia plus Germany - have held several rounds of talks on the Iranian nuclear energy program.
The US, the Israeli regime and some of their European allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and the European Union using the unfounded claim as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.
Tehran strongly rejects the allegation over its nuclear energy activities, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
As a veto-wielding power at the UN Security Council, Russia has repeatedly expressed its support for Iran's nuclear energy program, voicing opposition to sanctions slapped on Tehran.
