IAEA senior official in Tehran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Dec 13, IRNA -- Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Head of the Safeguards Department Herman Nackaerts arrived in Tehran early Thursday and was welcomed by a number of Iranian officials.

Deputy IAEA chief, heading a seven-member delegation, is in Tehran to hold a new round of talks with Iranian officials on the country's peaceful nuclear program.

Drawing up a new Modality Plan to help resolve the remaining issues between the two sides will top the agenda of bilateral talks.

Prior to his departure to Tehran, he told reporters at Vienna airport that he was hopeful of visiting Parchin.

Inspection from Parchin had been requested by the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano during recent Board of Governors meeting in Vienna.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that if Modality Plan between Iran and the IAEA is finalized, the agency's inspectors will be allowed to inspect Parchin.

The IAEA and Iran, in their last round of negotiations held in the Austrian capital, on August 24, 2012, agreed to hold fresh talks to reach a new modality and resolve the outstanding issues related to Iran's nuclear [energy] program.

Iran and the IAEA had also held talks in Vienna on May 14 and 15.

Before this session, representatives of the two sides had held two rounds of talks in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in February and January.

Iran believes that as a signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence indicating diversion in Tehran's nuclear program toward military purposes.
