TEHRAN (ISNA)-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said time is ripe for the UN to play a significant role in settlement of regional problems.
In a phone call with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Ahmadinejad raised concerns over recent incidents in some North African states and said, "time is ripe for the UN Secretary General to play a historic and important role in resolving problems to avoid another catastrophe such as those came in Iraq and Afghanistan."
He reiterated that the UN Security Council is not able to manage regional developments well due to ill wills of the US and some European states.
Ahmadinejad added interference of certain European governments as well as the US in regional affairs has made the situation more concerning and complex.
The Iranian President also called for paving the way for settlement of disputes in a peaceful and calm atmosphere.
Ahmadinejad added the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to play an active role in ending regional problems.
Ban Ki-moon on his part said he would do his utmost to settle regional problems.
He then raised concerns over killing of people in Yemen and Bahrain who are launching protests for freedom and democracy and urged leaders of the countries to heed to their nations' demands.
