Iranian Reformists Call for More Protests

By VOA News
04 August 2009

Iranian reformist and former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi says protests will continue as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prepares to take office for a second term.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais published Tuesday, Karroubi said he and leading opposition figure Mir Hossein Mousavi will never work with the Ahmadinejad government.

The two former presidential candidates were notably absent Monday at a ceremony during which Iran's supreme leader formally endorsed Mr. Ahmadinejad's second term.

Opposition supporters say they plan large street demonstrations against the president's swearing-in Wednesday.

Iran will also host its first foreign leader since the disputed June 12 election. Iranian state media report the Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said, is visiting Iran for three days to cement "good neighborly relations between the two countries."

Hundreds of activists have been arrested during post-election street protests that have been compared to the unrest that led to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
