Iran urges verification of nuclear countries' commitment to IAEA

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 13, IRNA – Delegation representing Iran at the third meeting of preliminary committee of 2010 NPT Review Conference proposed verification of commitment by western countries with advanced nuclear technology to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a statement, the delegation underlined the countries’ undeniable rights to peaceful nuclear energy and called on the states with nuclear technology to help develop peaceful use of nuclear energy.

It also criticized western countries for their stance on nuclear technology and for trying to create obstacles to the development of peaceful nuclear technology.

Article 4 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) underscores member states’ equal rights to peacful nuclear energy and urges exchange of equipment and technical information at the highest level so as to remove concerns among the members.

Referring to the growing need of the Middle East to peaceful nuclear energy, the statement further said that regional demands, once again, endorse Iran’s stance on the need to different sources of energy.

Despite NPT’s emphasis on peaceful use of nuclear energy and development of related technology, certain countries owning atomic arms have set up groups such as Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to control exports so as to pave the grounds for imposing limits on non-nuclear countries.

This is in contrast to the spirit of NPT and Iran is keen on removing restrictions imposed for transfer of peaceful nuclear technology and equipment.
