Khatami says he would rather not run for president

Tehran, Jan 21, IRNA – Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami said here Wednesday he would rather not run for president, as his running might cost expenses for country, adding, “Matter would be finalized in next few days.”

Hojjatoleslam Khatami who was speaking with the editorial board of Donya ye-Eqtesad economic daily, repeated his former assessment about the upcoming presidential elections, “Either I, or engineer Mir-Hossein Mousavi would run at upcoming election.”

He reiterated, “Merely presence at next presidential election would not suffice and it is not time to take any risk, therefore, we must do all we can to maximize our chance for winning the election.”

Khatami said that he would rather work at thought and cultural fields in Iran and at international scene, adding, “It takes a lot of intellectual work to pave the path for living at a religious democratic society where both the necessities of democracy and the norms of religion would be observed thoroughly side by side of one another.”

Head of Baran (rain) Cultural Foundation focusing on the role and the prophecy of the media, said, “We wish the independent media would manage to play their effective roles in informing the society and contribute to the intellectual maturation of our nation, so that their demands would be based on their real needs, and materializing those demands would be practically possible.”

Referring to the victory of the Islamic Revolution, he reiterated, “When our great revolution, led by the late Imam Khomeini (P) gained victory, it shook the world, since its was relying on the will of an entire nation.”

Touching on economy, he said, “We need to define our economic status in the framework of our own cultural, religious and Islamic values.”

He added, “We should not doubt about the need to abide by the norms of democracy, since it means yielding to the will of the majority, and practiced as the best possible method of governance in the East and the West of the world, since the mankind has come up with the conclusion that it is it the least costly, most beneficial way to rule.”

Khatami said, “We feel proud that the pattern presented by the Islamic Revolution and the late Imam Khomeini (P) for an ideal Islamic political system was the Islamic Republic.”
