Berlin unaware of '5 plus 1' meeting on Iran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jan 21, IRNA -- A German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday he was unaware of any plans for a '5 plus 1' meeting on Iran's nuclear program in Berlin early next month, according to IRNA.

Stefan Bredohl told media representatives in Berlin "no concrete date" had been set for such talks on Iran.

He added that the stance of the '5 plus 1' group had "not changed" and that they were waiting on an Iranian reply.

Tehran has repeatedly dismissed western demands to stop its uranium enrichment, saying it is legally entitled to have such a program under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Iran has time and again said it needs nuclear power to meet its growing energy needs.

It has accused the West of double standards by rewarding nuclear-armed states like India, Pakistan and Israel, while punishing Iran with sanctions for merely pursuing a civilian nuclear program.

Tehran has also made clear acquiring nuclear weapons were in strong violation to Islamic laws and teachings.
