Rahim Safavi, advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Iran plays an effective role in maintaining peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region.

Addressing a national seminar titled 'Persian Gulf in the World's Strategic Developments', Safavi said, "Iran wants peace in the Persian Gulf as well as cooperation among PG littoral states without presence of foreign powers."

"Peace cannot be established in the region unless Iran's key role in the region is taken into consideration," he said, adding that the presence of 200,000 American troops in the region underscores the importance of the region.

He termed the Persian Gulf as the most important and most strategic region of the world which links the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe.

He added that the region possesses 60 to 65 percent of the world's proven oil reserves and 42 percent of gas reserves.

Referring to the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina as the two poles of the Islamic world located in the region, Safavi said that Iran symbolizes a country ruled by a religious democracy and the political pole of the world of Islam.

The two-day national seminar opened in the city of Garmsar in Semnan province, central Iran.

The seminar, attended by researchers and professors of provincial Azad University, is to outline the strategic role of the Persian Gulf region in international economy and trade exchange.
