Iran's ambassador to the UN said here Wednesday that the UN Security Council has taken unlawful, unnecessary and unjustifiable actions in adopting resolutions against Iran over its peaceful nuclear program.

Addressing a Security Council meeting, Iran's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Mehdi Danesh-Yazdi said, "In the past 30 months and in a politically-motivated move, orchestrated by a few of its permanent members, the Security Council has taken unlawful, unnecessary and unjustifiable actions in adopting resolutions against the Islamic Republic of Iran over its peaceful nuclear program which presents no threat to international or regional peace and security.

"These actions have been taken against our nation only because we have decided to exercise our inalienable right to peaceful uses of nuclear technology as enshrined in the NPT."

Despite the extensive debates in the General Assembly Open Ended Working Group in the past 15 years, no significant progress has been made on the substantive aspects of the Council's reform such as its size and composition as well as the veto power, the Iranian envoy reiterated.

"We concur with the view that the composition of the Security Council is not representing the realities of the international community today, and this issue should be thoroughly addressed and resolved in any meaningful reform of the United Nations," he stressed.

Tehran believes that a meaningful reform of the council will be possible only through creating a situation where the question of underrepresentation of developing countries in the council is seriously dealt with and where the question of representation by nearly 1.5 billion Muslims is adequately and satisfactorily addressed, Danesh-Yazdi said.

He emphasized that every effort should be made to render the council more democratic, representative and accountable.

The Iranian envoy voiced Tehran's readiness to contribute to the achievement of this goal.
