The British Foreign Office Thursday confirmed that it had been sent a new package of proposals from Iran aimed at breaking the diplomatic deadlock over the country's nuclear programme.
"We have received the text of Iran's suggestions for negotiations.
We are now considering them," a Foreign Office spokesman told IRNA.
The proposals came after the Iranian Ambassador to London Rasoul Movahedian revealed last week that Tehran had "worked out a new package, a new initiative, which is going to be put forward in the near future to deal with all aspects of our relationship." The initiative presented to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany was said to cover Iran's peaceful nuclear programme, the security of energy supplies in the Middle East, counter-terrorism and joint efforts to control the drugs trade.
The 5+1 earlier this month also announced that it had agreed on "reviewed and updated" proposals that were made to Iran back in June 2006.
But the Foreign Office spokesman said that EU High Representative Javier Solana was still awaiting with the political directors of the 5+1 to make time available for a meeting to deliver the new offer.
The 5+1, he said, would be in a position to make a "preliminary response" to Iran's proposals at the time of the meeting.
In an interview with the Guardian on May 7, Movahedian was quoted saying that members of the 5+1 had been approached informally and there had been some "positive" response.
