Iran is pursuing the nuclear program only for the peaceful purposes and it has always followed the regulations of the IAEA in utilizing the atomic energy for peaceful ends, a senior Iranian diplomat has said.

Military Attache of Embassy of Iran in Islamabad Colonel Abdul Reza Bitaab said the defense doctrine of Iran is based on self-defense and necessary minimum deterrence.

Addressing a function in connection with the celebration of Army Day, he said the brave and self-sacrificing armed forces of Iran, under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, are fully prepared to give a fitting reply to any external threat and teach the aggressors a lesson which will never be forgotten by them.

He said Iran, like Pakistan has strived for the peace and security in the region and the world, and the Middle East in particular.

"Iran is fully opposed to all forms of terrorism and also severely condemns the state-sponsored terrorism of the Zionist regime against the innocent Palestinians," he said.

On the occasion, he hoped that relations between the armed forces of the brotherly countries of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which are very warm and cordial at present, will be further strengthened as a result of the sincere efforts of leaders and military commanders of both countries.

He said after the victory of the glorious Islamic Revolution in Iran on 11th February, 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran, during last 29 years, has achieved success in manufacturing highly sophisticated modern weapons indigenously in spite of the 8-year-long imposed war and economic sanctions imposed on it by certain countries.

Earlier, he thanked the participants for accepting the invitation and attending this function to commemorate the Army Day of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The function was attended by Pakistan's Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, several other ministers, top military generals, defense attaches and a large number people.
