Netanyahu Discusses Russian and Iranian Relations
Moscow NTV, 12 March 1997(excerpt from "Hero of the Day," with Yevgeniy Kiselev)
[FBIS Translated Excerpt] [Passage omitted] [Kiselev] [Kiselev] Let me put my final question to you, about the talks here in Moscow and the differences between you and the Russian Government. Can you possibly describe your position with regard to Russia's nuclear cooperation with Iran? We are aware that Israel is concerned over this, and yesterday our Foreign Minister Mr. Yevgeniy Primakov said he did not share your concern, your fears that this cooperation may threaten Israel's security. [Netanyahu] Iran is pursuing irrational policies. It is a major exporter of instability, radicalism, and terrorism to the whole world. This unstable regime in Iran did not in the past hesitate to launch its ballistic missiles with other countries as targets. If they have nuclear weapons, they likewise will have no qualms about whether to launch them or not. Regimes with dreams of world domination exist right now. If they receive the means of delivery, ballistic missiles, and nuclear weapons, no one will be able to feel secure--Moscow will not be secure, nor will Israel, nor Tel Aviv. Of course I criticized the Soviet Union. We were no friends of the communist regime; that is known. There was, however, one positive aspect: the Soviet Union was aware that it should not allow the proliferation of nuclear weapons and ballistic technologies and that it should not make these technological advances available to other regimes. This policy deserves respect, in my view. It should be continued. [Kiselev] Mr. Prime Minister, thank you very much for your answers to our questions. [Netanyahu] Thank you. [Kiselev] This was the interview which Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu gave to the "Hero of the Day" program today, concluding his visit to Russia.
