IAEA Director General to visit India next week

New Delhi, Jan 15, IRNA - Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano is to begin a two-day visit to India on January 17. He is to meet Indian nuclear scientists and visit various institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy.

Amano will be here to inaugurate the 21st Annual Conference of Indian Nuclear Society on 'Impact of Radiation Technology on Human Health and Environment' on January 17.

He will also visit Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the `Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer' at Kharghar at Navi Mumbai, pti reported quoting Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) sources.

On January 18, the UN chief will be visiting Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu which houses the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Nuclear Power Corporation's two operating indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, and BHAVNI's under-construction Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor(PFBR).

India has gifted indigenously developed technology for treatment of cancer - `Bhabhatron' - to Vietnam and Sri Lanka through the IAEA's Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy. One more will be made available to one of the African countries.

Amano will be presenting the Indian Nuclear Society's Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, who played a crucial role in the Indo-US nuclear deal without compromising the indigenous three-stage nuclear power program.

The IAEA Director General will also present the INS Outstanding Service Award, INS Young Scientists and Engineers Award, and INS Science Communication Award.
