France advocates civil nuclear cooperation with India

France has strongly advocated civil nuclear cooperation with India, provided New Delhi must fulfill its international obligations.

Addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the delegation level talks, the visiting French President Nicholas Sarkozy said that India has never contributed to the nuclear proliferation and it has already declared a moratorium in nuclear testing in 1998.

He said that India must get excess to civil nuclear energy to sustain its high growth rate with its essential for poverty elevation and education to the needy.

He added that in the absence of civil nuclear technology, more policing industries and energies will lead to the damage to the environment.

He said the French company Areva is more than willing to cooperate with India in achieving its energy security demand.

During the talks, Sarkozy reaffirmed France's support to India's bid for a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced that India and France have finalised negotiations for a bilateral agreement on cooperation in civil nuclear energy.

The two sides also decided to bolster their defence cooperation and take it beyond a buyer-seller relationship, Singh said at a joint press conference with visiting French President Nicholas Sarkozy.

Singh, who held extensive talks with Sarkozy on his maider visit to India, said the two sides have agreed to strengthen cooperation to fight terrorism.

Describing his discussions with Sarkozy as very productive and wide-ranging, Singh said both the sides reaffirmed our strong mutual desire to further strengthen our strategic partnership.
