The consequences of the war in Ukraine have been the prevailing theme of international discussions in recent weeks. "We've mobilised a great deal of support for Ukraine," said Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz during government question time in the Bundestag on Wednesday. With regard to further arms deliveries, he made it clear that, "We are working with our allies and not going it alone."

From gas supplies to the Climate Club

The war in Ukraine is also having an impact on energy supplies in Germany. The Federal Government aims to end Germany's decades-long dependence on a limited range of imports and to construct the necessary infrastructure. "That really is true energy security for Germany," the Federal Chancellor said.

Germany's goal for climate protection is to achieve climate neutrality by the middle of this century. Scholz stressed the need to accelerate the expansion of renewables. As part of the G7, a Climate Club has been set up, made up of states who share the objective of achieving climate neutrality. Scholz said this was a big step forward, noting that there were different paths to achieving it, but they all fitted together.

"Concerted Action" and relief packages

Scholz explained that the "Concerted Action" between the state, employers, employees and other participants was about supporting citizens in the face of ongoing price rises. He stressed the need to join forces and find a common way forward. The next meeting is planned for September. "Our social partnership has made Germany strong and will continue to do so," stressed the Federal Chancellor, adding that the Federal Government had put in place relief packages worth 30 billion euros. "This demonstrates that we're taking the appropriate action," Scholz went on.
