China expresses deep condolences over the passing of former senior DPRK official Kim Yong-nam: Chinese FM spokesperson

Kim Yong-nam, former chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), passed away due to illness at the age of 97 on Monday. When asked for comment, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told the regular press conference on Tuesday that former chairman Kim was an old friend of the Chinese people.
He led delegations to visit China on multiple occasions during his lifetime and made important contributions to promoting the development of traditional friendly cooperative relations between China and the DPRK, the spokesperson said.
Mao said that China expresses deep condolences over his passing and extends sincere sympathies to his family.
