Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has formed special task forces in response to the death of the North Korean leader to keep a close eye on developments on the Korean Peninsula and security in East Asia, an official said Monday.

The MOFA has launched task forces attached to its Taipei headquarters and Taiwan's representative office in South Korea after the news of Kim Jong Il's death emerged, MOFA spokesman James Chang said.

"We are also keeping in contact with Taiwanese people living in both South and North Korea to ensure their personal safety," Chang added.

The ministry will continue to monitor developments in North Korea and the possible impact Kim's death may have on the East Asian region, Chang said.

His remarks came hours after media quoted North Korea's official news agency as saying that Kim had died at the age of 69 Dec. 17. Kim is said to have suffered a stroke in 2008. (By Elaine Hou) ENDITEM//npw
