[Inside North Korea]

o According to a February 22 report, North Korea held a national rally of reporters and journalists declaring them to be a “political mouthpiece for a march toward construction of a strong and prosperous nation” and emphasizing that they stand for “protection of the leadership with pens and microphones.”

[Inter-Korean Issues]

o In a statement released by the spokesperson for the Korean Peoples’ Army General Staff, North Korea criticized the ROK-US Key Resolve/Foal Eagle exercise, dubbing the drill a ‘nuclear war exercise to launch a preemptive attack’ and saying that it would “mobilize all available means of attack and defense including nuclear deterrence to ruthlessly annihilate the stronghold of the invaders” according to a February 25 report. In addition, North Korea asserted that “the authorities concerned are investigating four South Koreans who remain detained after illegally entering the country recently” according to a February 26 report.

[Outside North Korea]

o In a February 24 report, North Korea said, “Comrade Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China had an amicable meeting with a visiting delegation of the International Affairs Department of the North Korean Workers’ Party Central Committee headed by Kim Young-il, director of the department, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on February 23.”
