Internal Affairs

On May 17, 24 and 25, Central Broadcasting Station reported that the construction of Wonsan Youth Power Station was on the final stage and the second-phase construction was vigorously underway.

On May 20, Central Broadcasting Station reported that repairing of Changgwang Restaurant Street in Pyongyang was in full swing. The Changgwang Service Management Bureau was leading the repair works, including decorating the exterior of restaurants with new materials, changing signboards and lighting system, replacing tables and chairs with newer ones and expanding restaurant halls.

Central Broadcasting Station reported on May 22 that the April 15 technology innovation leaders had completed about 1,507,000 innovation tasks for the last 18 years, greatly contributing to building a powerful and prosperous nation.

The volume of North Korea ’s external trade was $29.41 billion in 2007, an increase of 1.8% from the previous year.

Inter-Korean Affairs

Korean Central News Agency reported on May 24 that the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland criticized the 2008 Guidelines for Unification Education released by the South Korean government as a means to intensify anti-North Korea confrontation and anti-unification education.

Foreign Affairs

Through its state-run media, North Korea reported on the fact that the KWP and government officials offered their condolence and sent a wreath to earthquake victims in China ’s Sichuan Province .

Rodong Sinmun, Korean Central News Agency and other state-run media continued denouncing Japan citing Tokyo ’s attempts to build trilateral military alliance with South Korea and the United States while imposing sanctions against Pyongyang .

In a Chosun Sinbo commentary on May 23 titled “Prompt report on the U.S. food aid, a political expression ‘improved trust’ catching the eyes and ears of the people,” North Korea claimed that trust between Pyongyang and Washington had increased.
