Internal Affairs
Kim Jong Il provided field guidance to the Chongjin Goat Farm and the Chongjin Plastic Tube Factory on May 12, the Kyongsong Ceramic Factory and the Onpho Rest Home on May 13, and the Kilju Farm, the Kim Chaek Taehung Fishery Enterprise, and the Bukgwan Victory Monument on May 14, reported Central Broadcasting Station and Chosun Sinbo.
On May 14, Chosun Sinbo reported that the 11 th Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair had been being held from May 12 to 15 at the Three Revolution Exhibition Hall.
In the May issue of The Fatherland, a monthly magazine published by the pro-North Korean Chongryun, North Korea expressed its expectations over the reconstruction of Khasan-Rajin and Seoul-Shinuiju(Gyeongui) railway lines.
Inter-Korean Affairs
Through its state-run media, including Rodong Sinmun , North Korea denounced South Korea citing Seoul ’s decision to open its market to U.S. beef and other domestic issues of South Korea .
On May 16, Rodong Sinmun ran an article titled “A guiding principle for self-reliance and national unification and peace and prosperity,” in which the newspaper emphasized the October 4 declaration as a “common guideline for the whole Korean people to achieve peace and prosperity.”
Foreign Affairs
North Korea reported that it provided documents on its nuclear programs to Sung Kim, Director of the Korea desk at the U.S. State Department when he visited Pyongyang from May 8 to 10 and urged Washington to make a strategic decision. North Korea also reported on Washington ’s decision to provide food aid to Pyongyang .
Central Broadcasting Station, Pyongyang Broadcasting Services and other state-run media of North Korea reported in detail on the visit of the Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo to Pyongyang from May 10 to 14.
Korean Central News Agency, Pyongyang Broadcasting Services and other state-run media continued criticizing the United States citing Washington ’s military build-up and American-style democracy.
North Korea ’s state-run media reported that Kim Jong Il had sent a letter of condolence and made a donation to victims of earthquake in China ’s Sichuan Province .
Rodong Sinmun, Korean Central News Agency and other state-run media continued denouncing Japan over Tokyo ’s moves to legislate a basic law on space and its attempts for overseas expansion.
