ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Feb. 6), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by Minister of the People’s Armed Forces Kim Il-cheol, First Vice Department Director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea Chang Seong-taek, and others, inspected KPA Unit 1687 (date and venue unreported), and set forth tasks to be undertaken to further increase the unit’s combat capability.”

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Feb. 7), “A meeting commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean Agricultural Workers’ Union (established on Jan. 31, 1946) was held in the People’s Palace of Culture, and was attended by WPK Secretary Kim Joong-rin and others.” It emphasized, “All agricultural workers must hold high the banner of Seon-gun Revolution, excel in farming, and reap a bountiful harvest in the autumn.”

Outside North Korea

The Rodong Shinmun emphasized (Feb. 7), “The military movement of Bush’s belligerent group that has intensified since the beginning of the year is further solidifying the determination and will of our (the DPRK’s) military and people to fully exert our efforts to strengthen the nation’s power of defense.”

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Feb. 9), “Today marks the 6th anniversary of the signing of the DPRK-Russia Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation (Feb. 9, 2000).” It went on to say, “The people are supporting the efforts of the Russian government to intensify its national defense capability, which is collateral for guaranteeing national security.”

In its commentary, the Chosun Central News Agency contended (Feb. 11), “The United States, which fabricated stories of counterfeit notes, has recently been creating artificial obstacles to the six-party talks by going as far as raising such issues as the smuggling of counterfeit cigarettes and drugs.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Rodong Shinmun blasted (Feb. 8), “Again this year, South Korea is planning a joint military drill with the United States, which is aimed at destroying inter-Korean relations by driving the Korean peninsula to war.”

In an interview with a spokesperson for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, the Central Broadcasting Station lashed out (Feb. 9) by saying, “South Korea’s decision to participate in the PSI (Proliferation Security Initiative) simulation exercise is a challenge against us (the DPRK).” It contended, “This is an act that will stop inter-Korean relations in its tracks, and the South Korean authorities must rescind its decision to participate in the PSI exercise.”
