"The purpose of our real-combat training is to sharpen the abilities of our soldiers rather than to target a particular region," said Zhou Xuming, Deputy Commander of the South China Sea Fleet in response to media questions about the PLA's recent drill. Zhou emphasized that the drill was normal, routine annual training.

China News Service conducted an interview with Zhou Xuming at the front line of the drill. The drill included missile destroyers Hefei, Lanzhou and Guangzhou, guided missile frigate ships Sanya and Yulin, and supply ship Honghu, which carried three helicopters and dozens of commandos.

During 23 consecutive days and nights, the fleet covered more than 8,000 nautical miles and conducted real-combat training in six important straits and waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, according to Zhou.

Zhou said that it is very much in line with international practice to hold training drills in distant oceans.
