Maidan won't happen in Belarus - Lukashenko
24 February 2014, 14:40
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has ruled out the possibility of a Ukrainian scenario in Belarus. 'It's not enough to say that the Maidan is not acceptable in Belarus. There will be no Maidan in Belarus.
It's our, military men's duty and task to maintain peace and stability in our land,' Lukashenko said while meeting with the top Belarusian military and law enforcement officials on February 23, the presidential press service told Interfax.
'We should not lose vigilance here. We should learn from other people's mistakes and prevent even the slightest manifestations of instability in our country,' he said. 'There are many examples of that, including the smoldering 'revolutions' in Muslim countries and the periodic riots in the CIS countries,' he said.
The situation in Ukraine, where powerful internal and external forces have collided, is a fine example of that, Lukashenko said. 'Like I said, even our people have expressed concerns about the safety and stability of our state,' the president said. Lukashenko pointed out that, no matter how different events taking place in different countries are, they have common features.
'The weakening of public administration, corruption, impunity and irresponsibility of the authorities, which we have been talking about lately, lead to riots and anarchy. Society is splitting, the economy is stagnating, people are suffering and become a blind weapon of destructive forces.
If we don't have our own people, they may send people to us, and we should bear that in mind. Foreign 'well-wishers' fly to divide their prey, like hawks, fuelling passions and tensions even more,' Lukashenko said.
