US Embassy in Belarus Reduces Staff at Minsk's Request

MINSK (Sputnik) - The American Embassy in Belarus has had to further reduce its staff at Minsk's request, the diplomatic mission said.

"More U.S. diplomats had to depart #Belarus today because of the regime's unfortunate decision to limit engagement and dialogue. Whether in Minsk or elsewhere, U.S. diplomats will continue to support the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people. #StandwithBelarus", the embassy tweeted.

Earlier in August, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry proposed the US reduce the number of its embassy staff to five people by 1 September.

On 10 August, Belarus suspended negotiations on all new joint projects and programmes with the United States government until the restoration of trust between the two countries.

In August, the United States targeted the country's National Olympic Committee as well as entities in the tobacco, construction, and energy sectors in its latest round of sanctions against Minsk.
