LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORY

KEY FACILITIES

Experimental Physical Sciences Division

The Experimental Physical Sciences (ADEPS) is subdivided into three departments: Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA), Materials Science & Technology (MST), and Physics. Facilities at MPA and MST include:
  • Sigma Complex
  • National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the NHMFL Pulsed Field Facility
  • MST-6 Materials Surface Science Investigations Laboratory
  • MPA-11 Clean Room User Facility
  • Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML)
  • Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies
  • Ion Beam Materials Laboratory (IBML)
  • Materials Science Laboratory (MSL)
  • Superconductivity Technology Center

The Superconductivity Technology Center (STC), part of MPA, coordinates the research, development, and technology transfer of American industry, universities, and national laboratories in superconductivity. Its mission is to develop electric power and electronic device applications of high-temperature superconductors (HTS).

Facilities at STC include: Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) Laboratory, the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) Laboratory, the Superconductor Characterization Lab, the AC Loss Research Laboratory, the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Characterization Lab , the Electron Microscope Facility (EMF), the Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab (SPML), the Ion Beam Materials Lab (IBML), the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), the Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE), and the Los Alamos Research Park.

    Trident Laser Facility

The Trident Laser Facility, also called the Trident Laser Laboratory, is a neodymium-glass (Nd:glass) laser system for high energy density physics research and fundamental laser-matter interactions. The laser system has three high energy beams and two target experimental areas. The facility includes a neodymium-glass laser driver, high-vacuum target chamber, basic optical and x-ray diagnostics suite. It also has a darkroom, office space, computing facilities, and target fabrication services.

The Plasma Physics Group (P-24), within the ADEPS Physics division, works in both High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) and Plasma Physics. The group operates the TRIDENT High-Energy Density Facility, the Field-Reversed Experiment - Liner (FRX-L), the Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) experiment, low-temperature plasma laboratory, and the Reconnection Scaling Experiment (RSX).

Other ADEPS facilities and institutes include the Institute for Multiscale Materials Studies (IMMS), the Materials Design Institute, the Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory Quantum Institute (QI), and the Weapons Neutron Research Facility (WNR), which is part of LANSCE.
