Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY

Waste Area Group 10

Waste Area Group (WAG) 10 includes the experimental Field Station (EFS), previously the Experimental Dairy Farm, which is situated along the Big Lost River, 6 miles north of the Central Facilities Area. Originally, the small-scale dairy farm was used in the study radionuclide travel through the food chain, from air to vegetation to cow to milk and finally to humans. Research is conducted on protective caps at sites of waste disposal as a way to prevent the intrusion of water, animals, ants, and roots.

WAG 10 encompasses the Security Training Facility (STF), which was a practice shooting range. The Navy has used INL sites as practice artillery firing ranges. Known locations have been cleaned. The STF was formerly the Experimental Organic Cooled Reactor, which was built in 1962, and Organic Moderated Reactor Experiment (OMRE), which is located between WAGs 4 and 5. The OMRE included a reactor control building, an underground reactor, heat exchangers, a septic system, a leach pond, and a water tank. The project was canceled before completion; and in 1979 the facility underwent decontamination and dismantlement. The buildings and reactor were disassembled and the waste was transported to the Radioactive Waste Management Complex. The area was later used for storage, security force practice, and explosives testing.

WAG 10 also covers the Liquid Corrosive Chemical Disposal Area (LCCDA), which is between WAGs 6 and 7, and the Naval Ordnance Disposal Area (NODA), which is at several locations throughout INL.
