IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY
Safety and Tritium Applied Research (STAR) Facility
The Safety and Tritium Applied Research (STAR) facility, located at the RTC, is a research and development laboratory used for the study of fusion energy reactors and tritium science. It expanded the capabilities of the Tritium Research Laboratory (TRL), which was started in 1987. It increased the original facility's space and added a tritium recovery system and a tritium assay system. In 1979 the DOE chose the INL as the lead laboratory in its Fusion Safety Program. In April 2000, the DOE's Office of Fusion Energy Sciences selected the INL for the STAR facility. In 2001 the Tritium Plasma Experiment was moved from the Los Alamos National Laboratory to INL's STAR. The STAR facility is classified as a National User Facility, which permits non-DOE programs to use the facility on a pay-per-use basis.
