Past Reactors

Experimental Breeder Reactor-II

The Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) operated for 30 years, providing electricity for all of ANL-W and some of INEEL, before it was shut down in 1994 when Congress ended work on the next generation of fast reactors. In August 1964, EBR-II began generating power. It was later used in reactor development research and testing. In 1982 after LMFBR testing, which had been completed 1969, EBR-II was converted to an Integral Fast Reactor (IFR), a next generation reactor that reprocessed its own fuel. In the spring of 1986 EBR-II, proved the safety of metal fueled liquid metal reactors (LMRs) and that a reactor can protect itself against overheating and meltdown. Following closure, it was placed in a radiologically and industrially safe condition, defueled, decontaminated and decommissioned.

Transient Reactor Test Facility

The Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT), which achieved first criticality on February 23, 1959 and continued to operate until April 1994, was a pulse reactor used to study the performance of fuel and components in nuclear reactor during simulated reactor accidents. It included the Multi-Detector Analysis System (MDAS), a cooperative project with INEEL to analyze nuclear material non-evasively with a small accelerator.

Zero Power Physics Reactor

The Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR), which operated from April 1969 until April 1992 when it was put on stand-by and has since been listed among the MFC's resources, is a low power test reactor used to evaluate reactor designs for different materials and configurations.
