Iran - Hodhod Internet of Things
Hodhod nano-satellite is the second space achievement of the Omid company. The spacecraft is named after the Eurasian Hoopoe, whose song is a distinctive “hoopoopoo". This utterly unmistakable orange bird with a zebra-striped wings, a Chinese fan of a crest (usually held closed, but often raised just after landing), and a rapier of a bill. Hodhod is designed and built with a weight of 4 kg and an orbital life of 4 years. Its orbital height is considered 500 km, and by being placed in orbit, it is supposed to carry out missions such as the Internet of Things.
The Internet of Things, abbreviated as IOT, is a world of smart technology that affects almost all social aspects. Satellites suitable for IoT applications are usually placed in LEO orbit. Examples of the use of satellite IoT can be found in all industry sectors from marine applications to machine-to-machine applications in transportation, agriculture, oil and gas, utilities and construction, and many others. But remote sensing satellites are used in the discussion of terrestrial monitoring from space. Due to the fact that the speed of the satellite in the orbit is very high and they are placed at a low altitude of about 500 kilometers, this satellite travels the earth once every 60 to 100 minutes.
According to Fars News Agency's Science and Progress Group, Hassan Salarieh, head of the Iran Space Organization, along with a group of senior managers of the organization, visited the Omidfaza knowledge-based company, which is one of the private companies active in the space field, and were informed about the company's latest achievements. During this visit, the salary and senior managers of the Iran Space Organization were informed about the latest status and the final tests of the "Kotsar" and "Hodhod" satellites, which will be launched into space in the near future, and wished success to the space specialists working in this knowledge-based company.
One of the priorities of this knowledge-based company is to train an elite generation for the country's space industry, so the acceleration of technical teams was also on the agenda of the company's managers to play a role alongside experienced people in the space field; At the same time, the acceleration of the teams with the topic of space-oriented intelligence applications to bring the satellite system to use was also on the agenda.

Salarieh also spoke to the managers of this company, stating that Iran's space industry has been progressing at a good pace in the last two years with the support of the president himself, and emphasized: since last year, when the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution declared the slogan of the year to support Scientists introduced, the Iranian Space Organization prepared a written plan to implement this slogan, whose general strategies are also stated in the 10-year space plan.
He added: We have started the process of supporting knowledge bases in the field of space since last year and so far we have concluded several good contracts with these companies, one of which was concluded with the same Omidfaza company, during which we have guaranteed the purchase of some services of this company. The head of the Iranian Space Organization said: Although this year's slogan is no longer supporting knowledge-based organizations, the Iranian Space Organization is determined to continue the process of supporting these companies and the private sector. Because we believe that the annual slogans announced by the supreme leader of the revolution are not only related to the same year.
Salarieh stated: We will continue the process of visiting knowledge-based companies in order to support and create motivation so that the space ecosystem of the country is formed with the active participation of the private sector.
According to the information base of Iran Space Organization, Omidfaza company was established in 2017 with the aim of developing satellite systems and started designing and building the remote sensing satellite "Kotsar" with the help of several other knowledge-based companies and with the support of the scientific vice president. Now this satellite is in the stage of final tests.
"Hooded" satellite is the second product of this company, which can help control smart devices with telecommunication and Internet of Things applications. In addition to designing and manufacturing satellites, this company has not neglected the development of the related value chain, and therefore has started good actions in the field of satellite image services and remote sensing applications in the field of agriculture.
Mustafa Aghili, the executive director of the Iranian satellite manufacturing firm OmidFaza, disclosed 04 February 2024 the eagerly awaited launch schedule for the private satellites Kowsar and Hodhod, stating that the ambitious venture is set to take place in May-June 2024. "After successfully registering the Omid satellite project in our portfolio, OmidFaza decided to continue satellite manufacturing privately. Therefore, we initiated the design and construction of the Kowsar satellite," Aghili explained, addressing reporters.
"To execute this project," Aghili continued, "we were able to pre-sell images of the Kowsar satellite through collaboration with some institutions, and ultimately, it was designed and built with collective investment." Highlighting recent developments, Aghili pointed out, "Recently, the Space Organization, by signing a contract, pre-purchased images of the Kowsar satellite and secured the satellite's functionality."
Emphasizing the growing confidence in OmidFaza, Aghili noted, "On the other hand, others observed our capabilities and gradually gained confidence in us." Aghili revealed, "Based on this, an organization commissioned us to design and build the Hodhod satellite, making it the client of the Hodhod satellite project."
"If the Hodhod project is completed," he added, "the path for integrating these satellites will open up." Referring to the launch plans, Aghili explained, "It is planned that the Kowsar and Hodhod satellites will be placed in orbit by a foreign launcher."
"The construction of the Kowsar satellite took 4 years," Aghili highlighted, "and with the experience gained from this satellite, we were able to build the Hodhod satellite in one year." Aghili added, "Currently, these two satellites are in the assembly testing phase."
Regarding the launch time, Aghili reminded, "These two satellites were supposed to be launched in Azar (November-December) of the current year, but their launch time has been delayed by 6 months."
He added, "We conducted a test phase in Russia with the hope that these satellites would be launched in Azar of the current year, but the launch was delayed. If it is supposed to take place in Khordad (May-June) of next year, once again, in Ordibehesht (April) of next year, we will assemble the satellite in Russia and perform the necessary tests."
