CZ-DY New Generation of Manned Launch Vehicle A new generation of manned carrier rocket, also known as a new generation of manned rocket, commonly known as "921 Rocket" (codenamed " Project 921 " from China's manned space project), the actual name is the Long March 5 lunar landing version (CZ-5DY). It is a newly developed 70-ton payload heavy-duty launch vehicle based on China’s future aerospace development needs.

On the occasion of the opening of the 13th China International Aerospace Expo in September 2021, the new generation of launch vehicle family developed by the First Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, especially the new generation of manned launch vehicle, is highly anticipated. The new generation of manned rocket is a highly reliable and safe manned carrier rocket newly developed for launching China's new generation of manned spacecraft according to China's manned space engineering development plan. It is a new member of the new generation of carrier rockets.

The rocket is composed of boosters, core first, core second, core third, escape tower and fairing. The rocket is about 90 meters long and takes off. With a weight of about 2,000 tons, it can send a 25-ton payload directly into the lunar orbit, or a 70-ton payload into the low-Earth orbit. At present, this rocket is still in the development stage and has not yet shown its true appearance to the public.

The successful development of the Long March 5 series of rockets has given China the ability to carry out interstellar exploration and large-scale space station construction, but its 25-ton low-Earth orbit capacity is still limited. In order to carry out manned missions to the moon and more future exploration missions, China must develop more powerful rockets.

CZ-5DY New Generation of Manned Launch VehicleThe scale of the new generation of manned carrier rocket will greatly exceed that of the Long March 5 rocket. Judging from the current plan, the new-generation manned rocket has the same diameter as the Long March 5, and its height is nearly one-third higher than that of the Long March 5. The low-Earth orbit carrying capacity is 25 tons, which is about three times that of the Long March 5 rocket. The new generation of manned rockets is designed in accordance with the highest safety standards for manned flight, and meets the main technologies of China's Long March 5 and 7 launch vehicles, and optimizes the combination by using mature power and structural modules. In 2017, the First Academy launched the program demonstration work for a new generation of manned carrier rocket, and has completed multiple rounds of program comparison analysis. Advanced technologies such as safe escape systems, lightweight and high-strength new materials.

Liu Bing, deputy director designer of the General Design Department of the First Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, introduced that the new generation of manned launch vehicle will inherit the design standards and design genes of the Long March 2 F rocket’s highly reliable and safe manned launch vehicle. In terms of fault detection, automated flight, and related redundant design, a series of technical researches have been carried out. In the future, it will support larger tonnage spacecraft to enter space, making it easier, faster, more comfortable and safer for astronauts to enter space.

The aerospace industry often says: “The ability of a carrier rocket is as large as the stage of aerospace.” The new generation of manned carrier rockets has increased the low-orbit capability of China’s rockets from 25 tons to more than 70 tons through optimized combination. The requirements for ton-level manned spacecraft have maximized China's existing rocket development capability system and greatly improved China's ability to enter and exit space.

In the future, the new generation of manned rockets will also be used in future manned lunar exploration projects for demonstrations and missions such as circling the moon, circling the moon, and landing on the moon, and rapidly promote major improvements and leaps in China's launch vehicle technology and space access capabilities. In the future, it can also be used in combination with heavy launch vehicles to establish a lunar base, realize the sustainable development and utilization of the moon, and build an aerospace power in an all-round way.
