Wideband Gapfiller System
The WGS elements of the control segment consist of:
- The platform control information, data, and any required software used by the Air Force Space Command within the AFSCN for platform control and backup payload control.
- The payload control system element used by the US Army Space Command within each DSCS Operations Center (DSCSOC) for payload control and backup platform control.
The WGS primary payload control system element of the control segment is referred to as the Gapfiller Satellite Configuration Control Element, or "GSCCE". This element will also serve as a backup for platform control functions. It is a hardware and software subsystem of the Objective DSCS Operational Control System (ODOCS) and is contained within a DSCSOC.
The ground control segment leverages commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software, such as Raytheon's Eclipse™ telemetry and command system, to offer a robust and reliable design that is easy to operate and easy to maintain. This design reduces manpower requirements and other life cycle costs. The Army Wideband Satellite Operations Centers (WSOCs) around the world and the Air Force Satellite Operations Center at Schriever AFB in Colorado will be the primary control facilities for WGS. Satellite control can be performed via X-band or Ka-band links, as well as via SGLS or USB S-band links.
