Description (U):
(U) There are three thrusts in the Radiant ELM effort:
- (U) TACAIR Precision Strike Planning. Develop new mission planning tools that use national systems data to improve TACAIR mission planning effectiveness through better situational awareness and greater accuracy, and that are better tailored to specific weapon system capabilities and limitations.
- (U) TOMAHAWK Weapons System Support. TLAM (TOMAHAWK Land Attack Missile) mission planning relies primarily on electro-optical imaging to build DSMAC scenes for route planning. This effort will investigate the feasibiity of using IR and SAR imagery in the TLAM planning process to supplement EO inputs. It will also seek to fuze a host of other national system derived products to enhance effectiveness of and decreasing the time to plan TLAM strike missions. This will be accomplished via improvements and modifications to the Advanced TOMAHAWK Weapon Control Systems (ATWCS) and the Afloat Planning System (APS). A final effort is aimed at demonstrating the technical feasibiity of retargeting a TLAM during flight. Working with the TLAM Program office, this could result in a TLAM flight demonstration in FY98.
(U) Naval Strike and Air Warfare (NASWC) Enhancements. The NSAWC at NAS Fallow, Nevada, serves the navy as a center of excellence for Navy strike warfare, training, tactical development, and definition requirements. This makes NSAWC an ideal location for evaluating leading edge technologies and processes to improve strike operations. To this end, NSAWC is now a beta test site for imagery exploitation technologies. Navy TENCAP is also supporting several projects and demonstrations ranging from Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), Camouflage, Concealment, and Deception (CC&D), to delivering real-time information to the cockpit (RTIC) for enhanced situational awareness and retargeting in-flight.
(U) The plan is for these program offices supporting the naval precision strike mission to incorporate improved national systems into existing mission planning and rehearsal systems.User Impact (U):
