Description (U):
(U) The Maui Space Surveillance Site, located on top of Mt. Haleakala, HI includes three facilities for identifying man-made objects in orbit. The three systems includes the Air Force Maui Optical System (AMOS), The Maui Optical Tracking and Identification Facility (MOTIF), and a contiguous Ground-based Electro-Optical Deepspace Surveillance System (GEODSS) facility. GEODSS shares some of the AMOS and MOTIF resources but is otherwise an independent entity. The combined MSSS facilities have measurement capabilities that exploit its:
(U) Unique vantage point for observing suborbital vehicles, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, rockets launched from Barking Sands on the neighboring island of Kauai, and endoatmospheric targets such as aircraft and missile simulator drones.
(U) Favorable low-latitude location (20.7 degrees N) for satellite measurements.
(U) Excellent atmospheric characteristics for an observatory.
(U) Ease of access for visiting experimenters.
(U) The main field office building at the Maui Research and Technology Park, Kihei HI, includes optical and electronic laboratories, data processing, and administrative functions. An Operating Location of the Phillips Laboratory (PL/OL-YY) and Detachment 3, 18th Space Surveillance Squadron (SPSS) are Air Force offices located in the same building. Purchasing, shipping, and receiving functions are located in nearby Kahului, Maui.User Impact (U):
(U) Provides angles-only tracking and some space object identification for SSN.
