Mono-static Space Based Radar (SBR) (U)
Overview (U):
(U) The Mono-static Space Based Radar system was developed during the Space Sensor Study of 1995, conducted by SMC, ACC, and AFSPC. Representative designs consist of either 24-30 satellites at 1400 NM or 9-10 satellites operating at 5600 NM (Other designs also exist). The radars would operate at appropriate frequencies for given missions, e.g. L-band for airborne moving target detection. Ground stations would be used for command and control. The system would have a field of view over the entire earth, with the possible exception of areas near the poles. However, actual coverage would not be continuous over the entire earth. Instead, the desired AORs (up to six 350 NM areas, corresponding to current AWACS coverage for two theaters of interest) would be designated by the battlefield commander, and these AORs would receive continuous coverage (10 second revisit rate). The desired AORs could be changed quickly by electronically refocusing the phased array antenna feeds on the radar satellites.
