A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that on 09 May 2023, the make-up of Russia's annual Victory Day Parade in Red Square highlighted the materiel and strategic communications challenges the military is facing 15 months into the war in Ukraine.

Over 8,000 personnel reportedly took part in the parade, but the majority were auxiliary, paramilitary forces, and cadets from military training establishments. The only personnel from deployable formations of regular forces were contingents of Railway Troops and military police.

A vintage T-34 from a ceremonial unit was the sole tank on parade. Despite heavy losses in Ukraine, Russia could have fielded more armoured vehicles. The authorities likely refrained from doing so because they want to avoid domestic criticism about prioritising parades over combat operations.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during this day, Russian forces struck a C-300 missile strike on the civilian infrastructure of Konstantinovka in Donetsk region. In addition, they launched 35 air strikes and carried out 4 bombardment from jet systems of Ukrainian troops and settlements of Kherson region. civilians were injured, destroyed and damaged private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.

The probability of missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains high.

Russia continues to focus his main efforts in the Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdiiv and Maryinsky directions. During the day, Russian forces carried out more than 30 attacks on mentioned areas of the front. The fiercest battles continue for the cities of bahmut and marinka.

Mass dissatisfaction of locals with the temporarily captured Tokmak of Zaporizhzhia region, which the Russian occupation administration "evacuated" to Berdyansk. Russian occupants, under the pretext of the evacuation of civilians, continue to remove looted property from the frontline settlements of the Zaporizhzhia region. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in Kupyansk direction, Operational-Tactical and Army aviation and artillery of the Zapad Group of Forces have engaged the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine close to Timkovka Sinkova, Zagoryukovka, and Tabayevka (Kharkov region).

Close to Krakhmalnoye and Timkovka (Kharkov region) and Stelmakhovka (Lugansk People's Republic) the Russian Armed Forces have prevented infiltration attempts of five sabotage and reconnaissance groups.

The enemy suffered losses of up to 50 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, and one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system.

In Krasny Liman direction, Operational-Tactical and Army aviation and artillery of the Tsentr Group of Forces have inflicted fire damage on enemy manpower and hardware close to Stary Karavan, Terny (Donetsk People's Republic) and Chervonaya Dibrova and Nevskoye (Lugansk People's Republic).

The enemy suffered losses of up to 60 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, two motor vehicles, one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system, as well as one D-20 howitzer.

In Donetsk direction, assault detachments continued their offensive in the north-west and west part of the city of Artyomovsk. Airborne Troops support the action of the assault detachments paralysing the enemy on the flanks. Russian aviation conducted 10 sorties in this area during the past 24 hours. The artillery of the Yug Group of Forces have performed 98 fire tasks overnight.

Operational-Tactical and Army aviation and artillery of the Yug Group of Forces inflicted fire damage on the 67th Mechanised Brigade, 80th Air Assault Brigade, and 5th Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) close to Krasnoye, Stupochki (Donetsk People's Republic) and in the western suburbs of Artyomovsk.

The enemy has suffered losses of over 240 Ukrainian troops and mercenaries, three armoured fighting vehicles, four motor vehicles, as well as one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system in the past 24 hours.

Moreover, a missile artillery storage of the 55th Artillery Brigade of the AFU close to Belokuzminovka (Donetsk People's Republic) has been destroyed.

In South Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, aviation, artillery, and heavy flamethrower systems of the Vostok Group of Forces carried out an attack against AFU units in the areas of Ugledar, Nikolskoye, Vodyanoye (Donetsk People's Republic) and Orekhov (Zaporozhye region).

Close to Vladimirovka, the Russian Armed Forces have prevented infiltration attempts of five sabotage and reconnaissance groups.

In these directions, up to 70 Ukrainian troops, one command post vehicle, three armoured fighting vehicles, seven motor vehicles, and one Msta-B howitzer have been neutralised during the day.

Moreover, an ammunition depot of the 65th Mechanised Brigade of the AFU has been destroyed close to Preobrazhenka (Zaporozhye region).

In Kherson direction, Russian troops have neutralised up to 80 Ukrainian troops, four motor vehicles, and one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery systems during the day.

Moreover, an ammunition depot of the 121st Territorial Defence Brigade close to Kizomys (Kherson region) has been destroyed.

Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Group of Forces have engaged 98 AFU artillery units, manpower, and hardware in 119 areas during the day.

Close to Petrovskoe (Donetsk People's Republic), the 107th Territorial Defence Brigade's command outpost has been eliminated.

Moreover, close to Orekhov (Zaporozhye region), the 65th AFU Mechanised Brigade's weaponry and hardware maintenance post has been obliterated.

Russian air defence units have shot down one Su-27 airplane of Ukrainian Air Force near Izyum (Kherson region).

Air defence systems have downed four HIMARS projectiles during the day.

In addition, 10 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed close to Avdeevka (Donetsk People's Republic), Kuzemovka, Varvarovka (Lugansk People's Republic)), Zherebyanki, and Rovnoye (Zaporozhye region).

In total, 420 airplanes and 230 helicopters, 4,062 unmanned aerial vehicles, 421 air defence missile systems, 9,067 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1,098 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 4,780 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 10,103 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
