Congo Civil War - Kasai

These image samples are provided by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research - Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNITAR-UNOSAT) to provide visual samples of the widespread destruction visible in satellite imagery acquired over the Kasai region. To support OHCHR, UNOSAT analyzed thousands of square kilometers in the Kasai region using satellite images acquired on 9 June 2017, and compared them with imagery acquired previously on 19 May 2016 to document the destruction.

As illustrated by the image samples, towns and villages appearing intact in the 19 May 2016 imagery had experienced significant or total destruction by 8 June 2017, most likely caused by fire based on visibly blackened structural remains and other characteristics. The image samples include 4 locations in Kasai, with each location represented by the two images (May 2016 and June 2017).

Information on town names in regions like Kasai is always poor as official and complete surveys are not done, some towns may have multiple names in multiple dialects, and other reasons. Therefore the provided town names are the closest named locations in the best available data on this area but local residents may use a different town name.

Note that any use of these images must display "2017 DigitalGlobe", and UNOSAT can be credited as the source with "UNITAR-UNOSAT".
