Ex-East German, Polish-built salvage vessel. he ROU 26 "VANGUARDIA", was built in the shipyards of the city Gdansk, Poland and happened to serve in the Volksmarin (German Democratic Republic) the 28 of December of 1976 with the name of "Otto Von Guericke".

In November 1991, after the unification of the two Germans, was disaffected of the active service, happening to belong to the Bundesmarine remaining in Naval base of Warnemunde. It was reactivated by the first Uruguayan crew in the dam of Neptun Werft. On December 18, 1991, the national flag was declared in the naval base of Rostock, joining forces with the sea with the name of "Vanguard".

Since then he has carryied out different missions as a ship in charge of the supply and logistical support of the General Artigas Antarctic scientific base and also as a rescue and diving vessel due to its outstanding capabilities to carry out this task, which continues to be carried out uninterrupted until the Day of the date. Throughout these years the "Vanguard" has been the instrument with which has begun to write the history of our country as one of the states parties to the Antarctic Treaty.
