Capitan Miranda
sail training ship

Built in 1930 in the port of Cadiz, Spain, Captain Miranda was initially thought of as a hydrographic vessel. The characteristics of the ship were 55 meters in length, 8 meters of sleeve, 3.40 draft, diesel propulsion and sailing, and capacity for 47 crew. Captain Miranda's launching took place in July 1930. His name pays homage to Captain Francisco Prudencio Miranda, eminent Uruguayan sailor, hydrographer, historian, teacher, lecturer, writer and researcher on marine issues.

Although as a hydrographic vessel developed a remarkable and extensive work of more than 40 years, from 1977, Captain Miranda was transformed into Sailboat-School. The old ship then becomes a stylized schooner of three sticks. On the basis of the projects presented, its surface area was increased, adequate accommodation was built, its remodeling was carried out, its systems modernized and fully adapted for its new function.

Several Uruguayan companies participated in the transformation, mostly national materials were used, only indispensable elements were acquired abroad. The work was carried out by specialized personnel of the National Navy. Starting at his new task, he became one of the largest and fastest active sailboats, thanks to his modern rigging. On October 20, 1978, Captain Miranda inaugurated this new stage with his first training trip that would be repeated every year until today.

After 16 years of the first transformation that turned the Miranda into Sailboat - School, a new remodeling of the ship was approved. In June 1993, the ship entered the shipyard of the Bazán National Company in Cadiz, Spain. Due to its advanced state of deterioration, Captain Miranda was practically disarmed in its entirety and re-assembled minutely replacing each piece with particular precision. This second repair allowed the incorporation of a series of improvements, which added to the rigorous technological update,
