Colonia
These ships carry out surveillance and reconnaissance operations, preventing and repressing illegal activities on the river coast, carrying out search and rescue tasks in assigned areas and training in amphibious river operations, in order to contribute to effective control of jurisdictional waters, safeguarding Human life at sea and participate effectively in naval operations of the fleet.
Its construction was done in the yards of Curtis Bay Maryland USA, being the third in its class of the patrol boats of 95 feet. Originally such patrol boats were called for their five digit numbers, but in the mid-1960s the US Coast Guard Command decided to name those "cape" ships from the west coast and east of the country. CG 95302 was given the name Cape "HIGGON" from a small cape of the west coast at Martha`s Vineyard, Massachussets. During the Vietnam War the "CAPE" class was used as a training platform for crews.
The ROU "Rio Negro" was built in the United States of America for the US Coast Guard in the Curtis Bay shipyards, being baptized "Cape Horn", entering into service on September 3, 1958. In 1983 the ship undergoes a major repair and complete remodeling of its machines and structures. On January 26, 1990, he was transferred to the National Navy of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and renamed "Río Negro".
The "Rio Negro" class "c" and its twin the ROU "Colonia" class "b" arrived sailing from their country of origin to Montevideo on April 26, 1990, where they became part of the Marine Forces Patrol Division. The ship is named after an important department of the Republic, whose ports and participation in the west coast tie it to the National Navy in a very special way.
On June 19, 1990, the ship received its combat flag from the hands of the intendant of the department of Río Negro, which was made and donated by said town to the old Barreminas bearing the same name.
