![]() | 79 separate assault brigadeThe history of military unit A0224 begins with the directive of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR. The unit was formed in the period from September to November 1979 by the headquarters of the Red Banner Odessa Military District. The basis for the formation of the brigade were officers, ensigns, sergeants and soldiers of various units and units of the airborne troops. The Battle Flag was awarded on September 7, 1981. In 1992, during the process of disintegration of the USSR and the development of Ukraine's own Armed Forces, the 40th ODShBr was reorganized into the 40th UAEMBR and re-subordinated to the Commander of the Odessa Military District. At that time, the organization of the brigade consisted of 2 heavy and 1 light airborne battalions and support units. In 1999, according to the directive of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of January 13, 1999, the 40th Separate Airmobile Brigade was renamed the 79th Separate Airmobile Regiment. Paratroopers of the 79th Separate Airborne Regiment took part in a number of peacekeeping operations in the countries of the former Yugoslavia (Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro), Sierra Leone, Iraq and Liberia. In 2007, the regiment was experimentally merged with the Army Aviation Regiment into a single 79th Airmobile Brigade with direct subordination to the Command of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The heroic path of the 79th separate airmobile brigade in the fighting in eastern Ukraine began, as for other airborne units, with the defense of the Crimea; later the Nikolaev paratroopers began to defend the eastern border, took part in the operation to liberate Slovyansk, then - Savur-grave, Zelenopillya, Mariupol, Debaltseve, Airport. During these battles the Nikolaev paratroopers gained fame on both parties from a front line. On the 3rd of September and until the beginning of December 2014, a combined detachment of units of the 79th separate airmobile brigade performed a combat mission to defend the Sergei Prokofiev Donetsk International Airport. 242 days of heroic defense of the Donetsk airport under the blows of Russian special forces are forever inscribed in golden letters in the history of the Supreme Court, and its defenders were called "cyborgs" by the people of Ukraine. Since October 2017, brigade units have been performing combat missions in the anti-terrorist operation zone. |
