150th Separate Mechanized Brigade
The saga of forming the "150th series" brigades in the Ukrainian Armed Forces received another development. Thus, according to Ukrainian sources, the 150th separate mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was reformed into the 40th coastal defense brigade and transferred to the subordination of the 30th Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Navy.
The 150th Separate Mechanized Brigade ( Ukrainian: 150 okrema mehanizovana brigada , military unit A4935 ) is a mechanized formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces , formed in 2023. It became part of the creation of four other brigades to expand the Ukrainian Ground Forces in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is expected to take part in a potential Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2024. The brigade's insignia, motto , and creation were officially unveiled and revealed in December 2023.
The 150th separate mechanized brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was in the formation stage at the end of 2023. The command and organizational core of the brigade are experienced servicemen with combat experience gained in eastern Ukraine in clashes with the enemy. The brigade includes both servicemen who had just started their journey and experienced soldiers who would help others become a true and worthy defender of Ukraine.
The brigade is armed with several pieces of equipment. Like other brigades, such as the 154th Mechanized Brigade , the brigade has received older Soviet tanks such as the T-64BV. At least one T-64BV has been observed in service with the brigade, independently produced by the brigade on various platforms. The brigade also had a small number of infantry fighting vehicles, such as the BMP-2, with one of these being in service with the brigade.
According to official reports, the unit received Dutch YPR-765 armored personnel carriers with an Australian EOS R400-Mk2 combat module with 40-mm Mk19 grenade launchers. It is difficult to assess the intent of such a decision, but it is another brick in the wall of huge problems that haunt almost all new Ukrainian brigades with numbers from 150 and above. Let us recall that these brigades, initially formed as mechanized, due to a lack of equipment and organizational problems, became motorized infantry, then mechanized again, and then ended up as Jaeger (light infantry).
There was even a whole investigation recently about the significant problems in the 152nd Brigade , and the crowning achievement of what was happening was the situation with the 155th Mechanized Brigade, trained in France , which upon arrival in Ukraine partially disbanded and partially was scattered among other units in different directions. Now the fate of yet another reorganization has befallen the very first and best-equipped brigade from the failed series.
