1,400-ton Light Frigate
The Monterey Talks are the highest-level security dialogue between the US and Taiwan, and have taken place every year since 1997. These annual high-level security discussions are called the "Monterey Talks" because they take place in Monterey, California. The National Security Council has expressed different views on military-building guidelines including the role of large-scale surface ships, survivability in wartime, and other issues, and its guidelines obviously refer to the recent key recommendations of the United States. This may have something to do with the outcome of the Monterey talks between Taiwan and the United States. This may have an index significance for the composition of the navy's future force structure. These instructions obviously have a direct and significant impact on the configuration and execution direction of the new generation of frigates.
The annual Kaohsiung International Maritime Exhibition debuted 27 September 2018. It is worth noting that the Taiwan government had fully promoted the "National Shipbuilding" policy. The design concept of a generation of 1,400-ton light frigate can be used for maritime patrol, support short-range air defense, anti-ship and replenishment acquisition, and combat training missions. However, there was no similar proposal in the current naval shipbuilding plan, and it was not known whether it will be included in the plan in the future.
According to the video released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences today, this new type of light frigate has a displacement of about 1,400 tons, adopts a rotating phased air defense radar, 76 fast guns, and is equipped with 8 anti-ship missiles and 16 medium and short-range air defense missiles, all of which are tilted. Type launching system, equipped with special warfare boats, rotating jamming rockets, anti-submarine torpedoes, sea sword antelope close defense weapon system and remote control cannons. Although it did not state the types of missiles carried by the ship, according to the animation of the simulated engagemen, it should be the Yuji Anti-ship missile and the Sea Sword II anti-aircraft missile.
The stern is equipped with a tilted launch system; the stern is equipped with an anti-submarine torpedo, a close-in defense weapon system and two cannons; the bottom of the stern is also designed with a towed sonar. The "light frigate" is 85 meters in length, 13.1 meters in width and can seat 70 people. In addition to the "plane search radar", "fire control radar" and "air defense radar", it is also equipped with a "special warfare boat". ", "Rotary jamming rockets", "Sea Sword Antelope Close-in Defense Weapon System" and remote-controlled machine guns.
It is assumed that under the assumption of missile attacks from enemy destroyers, submarines and air forces, the "light frigate" can command the combat direction through the joint operations center through the cooperation of satellites, drones, and P-3 anti-submarine aircraft, and then use the ship’s firepower to annihilate the attacking missiles and successfully kill enemy submarines and destroyers. The emerging powerful maritime combat power has aroused many discussions.
The first class combat ships in service in Taiwan are all destroyers and frigates with a displacement of more than 4,000 tons. The second class ships are dominated by Tuojiang-class and Jinjiang-class patrol ships with a displacement of less than 1,000 tons. Will the navy include light frigates in the project in the future? Yan Zhaoying, director of the Public Relations Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with the reporter of "ETtoday News Cloud" on the 27th that the design of the light frigate is still in the blueprint stage. The inclusion in the construction project has not yet been determined.
