4th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron

A RF-5E from the 4th Reconnaissance Squadron crashed into the Taiwan Strait off Hsinchu on October 12, 2003. The incident took place roughly 16 minutes after take-off from Chin Chuan Kang Air Base. The pilot was forced to eject after his plane caught fire.

The squadron has conducted many successful reconnaissance missions in recent years, including providing valuable information after the earthquake of September 21, 1999, the China Airlines' accident over Penghu in May 2002, and the sinking of a Greek tanker off of Taiwan's southern coast that caused considerable environmental damage.

Taiwan's RF-5E fleet was converted in Singapore in the mid-1990s from earlier F-5E models after the Air Force's RF-104G aircraft came to the end of their service life.
