Khartoum International Airport 15.5922 32.5496

Khartoum International Airport is the largest Airport in Sudan, and Sudan's only gateway to the world. The IATA code for the airport is KRT. Khartoum International Airport serves the capital and largest city in Sudan, Khartoum. The airport is the largest airport in the country and serves airlines from across Africa. At Khartoum International Airport alone, 19 airlines operate and serve flights to and from 22 destinations. Khartoum International Airport is the primary air gateway to the Republic of Sudan, situated in Khartoum, the Capital of Sudan.

The airport’s peak time is during the late evening and early hours of the mornings when the temperature is lower and the aircrafts operate to optimum payloads. Khartoum International Airport functions under the operating constraints of the high temperature, thus the quiet period for the airport is 1200 hours to 1700 hours, the busy period is from 1700 hours through to 0500 hours with the inward and outward passenger and freight movement.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of Sudan said 15 April 2023 it had seized control of Khartoum Airport and the Merowe military base in the north of the country, according to a statement. Earlier in the day, fierce gunfire and sporadic artillery fire had been heard in Khartoum and other areas amid mounting tensions between the Sudanese army and the RSF. "The Rapid Support Forces defended themselves in response to the hostile forces inflicting heavy losses" on the regular army, the RSF statement said. It said its fighters "were able to take control of Merowe airport and base" north of Khartoum, "expelled attackers on bases in Soba" and "took control of Khartoum airport."

But the Sudanese army denied such claims and insisted later that it still controls all military bases and airports. It said the RSF had tried to attack its troops in different positions and the Sudanese air force is conducting operations to confront the RSF. Sudan has been suffering a political crisis since the Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on October 25, 2021, and dissolved the sovereign council as well as the government.
