FSE "Nizhny Tagil Institute of Metal Testing"
Federal State Enterprise FSE "Nizhny Tagil Institute of Metal Testing" tests artillery armament, ammunition and its component parts, land and navy artillery of medium and large caliber; ammunition for air-gunnery; air bombs; unguided rocket missiles; ammunition for volley fire jet systems; close combat facilities.
On October 1, 1939 the gunshot sounded in the suburbs of Nizhny Tagil meant the beginning of fighting activity of Ural artillery testing ground. The testing ground was established in short terms according to the Soviet Government Decree in order to test the quality of ammunition manufactured by Ural and Siberian defense plants. The testing ground importance rose sharply at the period of Great Patriotic War. The products of 182 plants were tested and the ammunition assemblage was carried out.
In post-war period testing ground activity was oriented on further ammunition improvement, cooperation with leading design and scientific institutions in the field of new high-performance armament systems.
In early 60-s the testing ground entered the new qualitative level of its development. It has gained a status of scientific-research organization which was aimed to find the scientific method of ammunition testing and to get a wide spectrum of data about devices performance under the fighting conditions. New perspective lines have appeared in the scientific and technical activity : air tests and special - purpose, testing ground equipment manufacture. For these purposes flight-testing base (1959) and the Special Design Bureau of measuring equipment (1972) were established.
Special Design Bureau of measuring equipment (SDB)
In 1972 at NTIMT a Special Design Bureau of measuring equipment (SDB) was established. There was a necessity to increase a self-descriptiveness of the testing ground ammunition by means of creation and wide use of new testing ground measuring systems. The SDB location on the testing ground turned out to be very optimal and fruitful, on the one hand it allows the developers to get to know the testing ground problems and requirements of the testing ground systems and on the other hand, gives opportunities to qualitative and valuable run of created measuring systems under the conditions of the real testing ground exploitation.
Since the SDB establishment in its organizing and technological structure the method of comprehensive approach has been used: SDB performs a whole cycle of work, from development up to production, delivery and after-sales service of the testing ground measuring equipment. This requirement is explained by the wide nomenclature of the testing ground measuring systems and necessity to produce measuring equipment in short terms and unit character of its output. The SDB develops and produces the measuring equipment of different types and purposes as well as radar, optic-electronic, radio telemetry, television, acoustic, information processing systems, various sensors and initial converters and so on.
The industrial grounds of the Special Design Bureau of measuring equipment are 10500 sq m, where the branches over the testing ground equipment development, mechanical, radio electronic, microelectronic manufactures and others, providing the design bureau running are situated.
The SDB consists of unique scientific and technical centers of development and production of gas high pressure piezoelectric sensors , crushers, shock-proof on board radio telemetry equipment. During 30 years activity SDB created more than 96 items of ground testing measuring equipment, delivered to 182 enterprises Russia and abroad as well. The created equipment is intended to determine more than 164 parameters, to demonstrate performance of ammunition and its components, when on the testing ground. The developed equipment was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1985.
Nizhny Tagil
The City of Nizhny Tagil, as a significant settlement, was born together with the Demidovs` iron plant, matured and grew together with the plant and the mine. Craftsmen of Tagil made a significant contribution to the growth of power and defense of Russia, to the technical progress development. Next to many their deeds there are words "for the first time in Russia" and even "for the first time in the world". The first Russian locomotive designed by Ephim and Miron Cherepanovs, the electric light advent at one of the plants of the Tagil district, at that time the majority of European capitals did not know about the electric light yet. To save the material memory about the achievements and deeds of Tagil craftsmen in the 17th -19th centuries, the municipality and city enterprises have established the first museum of mining-factory work in Russia on the territory of the old Demidovs` plant. The main part of exposition is formed by the exhibits, which narrating the history of "iron work". This museum, as a monument of the industrial culture and architecture, has been highly estimated by UNESCO specialists.
Today Nizhny Tagil is one of the largest cities in Ural, the center of metallurgical and chemical industries, machine building and building industries, with population 400 thousand people. The city communicates practically with all cities of Russia by highways and railways. Air communication with the largest cities of the world is through the airport "Koltsovo" in Ekaterinburg, which is located 1,5 - 2 hours journey by car from Nizhny Tagil.
There are comfortable places of residence in the hotels at the central part of the city and in picturesque places of the near suburb as well to accommodate more than 2000 guests simultaneously. All places of accommodation are provided with telephone and mobile communication with cities of Russia and abroad. Nizhny Tagil is a district for foreigners to come to easily .The tourist service is run by dozens of the tourist companies, the largest among them are "Sputnik" and "Expo-Tour". The tourist service includes visa support, transfer, excursions service: the visit of historic places of the city and the suburb (the motherland of the writer Mamin-Sibiryak, the famous "falling" tower, built in the 18th century in Nevyansk, the city of Verhoturie is one of the largest orthodox centers in Russia) and other. Visitors of the city will have fun in the cultural and entertainment centers of the city, the largest and the most attended are "Era" (sport bar, bowling, billiards) and "KIT", mountain ski resort and shooting gallery center it the mountain Dolgaya, casino, sports centers with training facilities, saunas and swimming-pools.
Cash machines network, broadly developed in the city, take credit cards "Visa". The fleet of taxicabs is at the disposal of the city visitors, there is a possibility to hire representative class automobiles. The Russian, the East and the European cuisines are offered at the restaurants and the cafes of the city.
