Atoll Research and Development Institute

April 14, 1976 By the order of the Minister of Shipbuilding Industry of the USSR, the Atoll Research and Development Institute was established as a leader in the development and manufacture of positional lighting systems for underwater and surface conditions in various water areas. Thanks to the high achievements of the natural sciences, by the middle of the 70s of the XX century, in the research of applied acoustics, they approached the development of fourth-generation stationary hydroacoustic means (SGAS). The main activity of the new applied institute was the creation of hardware and software systems for the collection, transmission and processing of hydrophysical information, that is, the development of acoustic devices for the detection, monitoring, classification and tracking of various underwater and surface objects. This information was supposed to provide control at the borders of the zones of economic interests of the country.

It was planned to use large-scale digital systems based on computers for transmitting information, digital signal processing, and a new element base in the new SGAS equipment. For these purposes, a research institute and a pilot production site were created. The city of Dubna was not chosen by chance, since it had excellent conditions for carrying out water-acoustic work. Currently, the Atoll Research Institute has its own testing ground on the Moscow Sea. For these purposes, a research institute and a pilot production site were created. The work was carried out with the direct participation of the customers representative - the military mission, which meant the active participation of military specialists in creating models of military equipment, quality control of manufacturing, ensuring effective and reliable operation, positioning, testing and transferring a new generation of combat-ready radio engineering complex to the fleet. On July 2, 1976 The Atoll Research Institute employed 276 people; construction of production facilities and laboratory buildings was actively underway. By the beginning of the 90s, the Institute had highly qualified specialists in the field of physics, hydroacoustics, instrument engineers, programmers, designers, technologists, and workers.

Since its inception, the Institute has completed more than 450 research projects. In 2000, the authors team of the Atoll Research Institute was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for the creation of the MGK-608 complex, which in terms of tactical and technical characteristics significantly surpassed the analogues previously developed in the USSR and the Russian Federation.

By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of 08.08.2004 No. 1009 Research Institute "Atoll" was included in the list of federal state enterprises of strategic importance to ensure the defense capability of the state.

By order of the Government of the Russian Federation of October 3, 2009 No. 1438-r pursuant to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of August 24, 2009 No. 971 "On the further development of the Morinformsystem-Agat Concern joint-stock company," Atoll "research institute was included in the list of federal state unitary enterprises planned for privatization in 2009. The successor of the Atoll Research Institute is the Open Joint-Stock Company Atoll Research Institute, created by reorganization in the form of a transformation by order of the Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Federal Property Management in the Moscow Region of December 31, 2010. No. 772 "On the privatization conditions of the federal state unitary enterprise" Research Institute "Atoll". The date of state registration is February 4, 2011.

Since its founding, Atoll Research Institute has been developing concepts for constructing systems for monitoring the state of marine and land zones, which are strategically important. The monitoring systems developed by the institute are geographic in scope. The positional sonar systems created by the institute allow solving the problems of detection, classification, determination of motion elements and coordinates of underwater and surface objects. The information received about possible unauthorized entry into the territory of "closed" facilities is of great military and economic importance. The Institute has many years of experience in operating stationary sonar systems. Research Institute "Atoll" carries out work in the following areas:

  • implementation of fundamental and applied research and development;
  • development and production of military and dual-use products, including:
  • positional sonar systems for underwater observation;
  • positional stationary complexes for protecting marine and coastal facilities from unauthorized penetration of underwater intruders;
  • seismic acoustic perimeter security equipment.
The company has unique technologies for the creation and production of extended underwater lines for the collection and transmission of information based on traditional and fiber-optic cables. When transmitting a significant amount of information, multichannel communication systems are used. To convert and process the received data, the creation of specialized information and computer systems is required, which is one of the institute's activities.
