Polikarpov I-16 - Variants

I-16 type 4 with engine M-22. The first serial I-16, the main difference is the cylindrical bonnet NACA. The concept of cylindrical is relatively arbitrary, because the trailing edge of the trailing edge skirted the contour of the fuselage with a constant output slit, so the hood had a slight taper.

I-16 type 5 with motor M-25A. Serial production continued from the middle of 1935 to February 1938. In essence, this aircraft was a type 4 with a new engine. The machines of the first issues were externally different only by hooding the engine and by the presence of a coke-spinner of the propeller. During the serial construction, type-5 was installed in stages with wheels 700x150, a fixed visor instead of a shifted lantern, detachable consoles with a more frequent pitch of the ribs and a smaller aileron. These changes are explained by the fact that type 5 continued to be released in parallel with later types.

I-16 type 6 with motor M-25A. A small modification of the aircraft, applied in Spain. Added the third synchronized machine gun "SHKAS" in the lower part of the fuselage.

I-16 type 10 with motor M-25V. This aircraft was a major modification of the I-16 after three years of serial production and had the following main differences: The M-25V engine of increased capacity was delivered. The armament was supplemented by two upper synchronous machine guns "SHKAS", enclosed in protruding fairings. The sliding lantern is replaced by a fixed visor with a stainless steel frame. The airframe of the aircraft underwent significant changes. Wiring of the wing console by duralumin is increased to 44.5% from above and to 14.5% from below. The number of ribs on the upper surface of the wing is increased.

I-16 type 12 with motor M-25A. A small modification of the aircraft, based on type 5, with two wing guns "ShVAK" installed in addition to the "SHKAS" machine guns.

I-16 type 14 with engine M-22 (UTI-2). Double-seat trainer without weapons.

I-16 type 15 with motor M-25A-25V (UTI-4). Double-seat trainer without weapons. Manual control of the aircraft and motor is double. The chassis lift and the mechanical chassis lift indicator are installed in the rear cab. In connection with the lack of armament, there are no hatches for servicing on the center wing. During the serial production UTI-4 was subjected to some changes. Machines with M-25V had a branch pipe of the oil cooler on the front part of the hood, the chassis with a splined rack was subsequently replaced with a chassis with a two-linked chassis. a crutch with rubber cushioning - on a crutch with oil-and-pneumatic cushioning. Part of the UTI-4 was equipped with an air screw AB-1 with a modified mechanism for changing the pitch. Starting from the machine No. 1521109, small fuel tanks with a capacity of 35 liters were installed at UTI-4.

I-16 type 17 with motor M-25V. It was a type of type 10 with the replacement of the wing machine guns "ShKAS" with cannons "ShVAK". Power guns are carried through the sleeves, laid behind the first frame of the fuselage, and then along the front spar of the center wing.

I-16 type 18 with the M-62 engine. The modification represents type 10 with a new more powerful motor. The alterations concerned the reinforcement of the engines, installation of the tested fuel tank, a significant change in the oil system.

I-16 type 24 with engine M-63. Further modification of type 18, in accordance with the norms of strength of 1937.

I-16 type 27 with the M-62 engine. Further modification of type 17 with the replacement of M-25B by M62. All structural changes have touched the propeller-driven plant like type 18.

I-16 type 28 with motor M-63. Further modification of type 27 with M-63. The changes are general, in accordance with type 24.

I-16 type 29 with the M-63 engine. A large-caliber machine gun "BS" (Berezina synchronous) of caliber 12.7 mm was installed in the lower part of the fuselage, in the space between the chassis niches, there is no wing weapons. The oil cooler is moved to the space between the fourth and fifth cylinder of the engine.
